Punteggio 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jul 2010

Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of black plum, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate, along with some strong oak tones. At once fairly dense and nicely aromatic, smooth and energetic, showing good breadth for the year but also the light pepper and herb notes that characterize so many of these wines. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and nice length. This boasts considerable sex appeal.

A plump, exuberant, in-your-face style of St.-Emilion, this 100% Merlot was cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare. It exhibits beautiful mocha, kirsch, and black currant fruit, a creamy, full-bodied texture, and noticeable toasty, smoky oak. Made in a modern style, it is a fleshy, rich, magnetic wine to enjoy over the next 6-8 years.

Red-ruby. Musky, nicely ripe aromas of plum, black raspberry, licorice and game; wilder and sweeter on the nose today than the Becot brothers' Beau-Sejour-Becot. Sweet on entry, then fine-grained and a bit youthfully tight in the middle, with sound acidity giving this all-merlot wine very good structure for the year. With its greater breadth, the acidity seems more thoroughly integrated today than that of the Beau-Sejour. These vines were harvested on October 1 and 2.

Dark crimson. Creamy, sleek nose – very compact. Well done! Very vibrant with lovely texture and good sappy fruit but no excess of acidity or tannins. Good balance. Really confident. (JR)
