Punteggio 88/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Nov 1999

A super extracted nose framed by noticeable oak leads to sweet and very ripe flavors that are frankly anonymous. To be sure, this is a big wine with firm but ripe tannins and good if not exceptional density and length. In short, those who admire size may appreciate this style more than I do but this is more red wine than Burgundy.

Punteggio 93-95/100 · Da bere 2002-2010, Pierre Rovani, Oct 1999

Prieur's 1997 Musigny, tasted immediately prior to bottling, displays deep black cherry, violet, and mocha aromas. This broad, refined, well-delineated, and full-bodied wine is replete with over-ripe blackberry and chocolate flavors. This well-wrought, harmonious, and elegant wine appears to expand and gain in strength from the attack all the way through its impressively long and detailed finish. An impressive wine, it should be at its best between 2002-2010+. Under the guidance of Martin Prieur and the assistance of Maison Rodet's highly talented wine-maker, Nadine Gublin, Domaine Jacques Prieur crafted fabulous wines from the 1997 vintage. The estate's yields averaged 28 h/h. None of its wines have a natural potential alcohol below 12.5%, and not a single offering was either chaptalized or acidified, according to Prieur and Gublin. Importers: William Deutsch and Sons, Ltd., Armonk, NY; tel (914) 273-1221; fax (914) 273-1291, and Winesellers Ltd., Skokie, IL; tel (847) 679-0121; fax (847) 679-2017.

Fresher red-ruby color. Chocolatey surmaturité on the nose, along with violet and smoky oak. Sweet entry, then velvety and superripe but with considerably more verve than Prieur's '97 Clos Vougeot. Slight suggestion of damp earth. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins. My score is for concentration, size and palate presence rather than terroir character.
