Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2019-2033, Neal Martin, Aug 2019

The 2002 Musigny Grand Cru is always an intriguing wine. Christophe Roumier felt that the original 350-liter barrel was erroneously over-toasted by the supplier and so he racked the wine into two used barrels to reduce the influence of the oak. My only encounter testifies to a risky but rewarding decision. The red fruit seems perfectly simpatico with the wood, wonderfully defined and expressing that ethereal, airy quality that 2002s often convey. The palate is pure and harmonious, quite effortless in style, and adorned with a precise, detailed finish that fans out gently. Wonderful. Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong.

The 2002 Musigny Grand Cru is an intriguing wine since Christophe infamously chose to re-barrel because he felt the imprimatur of the oak was too strong. Perhaps that was a wise thing to do as the wood component feels simpatico with the red berry fruit laced with black tea and undergrowth. The palate is very cohesive, a fine backbone here, effortless in many ways with a poised and sustained finish. Wonderful. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

Good full, bright, deep red, the darkest of these 2002s. Musky aromas of raspberry, blueberry, espresso and toasty oak; less floral today than the Bonnes-Mares. Superrich and deeply pitched, with flavors of blueberry, violet, licorice and earth. Dense but juicy, with terrific cut. Lush and smooth wine with strong material. Finishes with substantial oak spice and outstanding persistence. This started in a new 350-liter barrel, but Roumier racked it into one and a half barrels of used oak because he thought the wine was getting too toasty.
