Although more austere than one expects from the home estate of Dany and Michel Rolland, the 2004 Fontenil is a concentrated effort displaying striking minerality along with notes of black currant and blackberry fruit, chunky tannin, medium body, and excellent concentration as well as purity. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15 years.
Medium ruby. Blackberry and licorice aromas lifted by minerals. Supple on entry, then tightly wound, juicy and pure, with flavors of medicinal black cherry, minerals and licorice. Not fat but not at all hard. This has intensity and solid structure.
Extremely dark crimson. Very sweet. Soft and round. A bit smudgy. Not much fruit in the middle. (JR)
