Note di degustazione
The 1964 La Conseillante attests that this Pomerol château was not firing on all cylinders during this era because it should be a bona fide great wine if one considers its peers. That said, even at 46-years of age it was the best La Conseillante up until the 1980s. It has a simple bouquet, tobacco and truffle notes, lacking the sumptuousness that the best 1964 Pomerols were bestowed. The palate is medium-bodied with obdurate rather than typical melting tannins, a slight balsamic note on the finish but there is a sense of grace to this fading wine. Tasted blind and taken from the book "Pomerol".

Great rich ruby with layers of complexity. Tea-leaf aromas. Lively and very fresh, a little lean. A bit taut. Great start but it dried up a little on the finish. (JR)
I had an excellent bottle of the 1964 La Conseillante in the late eighties that proved to be better than I indicated in my tasting notes in the first edition of this book. Medium ruby, with some amber at the edge, this wine has a sensational nose of smoky, almost buttery, nutty, superripe, plummy fruit and herbs. In the mouth, it is round, generous, even opulent, with a great deal of concentration, and a long, alcoholic finish. By the standards of the chateau, this is a larger-framed, more muscular wine than usual. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 11/89.
