Though the First Growth's fortunes were beginning to wane under the Ginestet family, the 1966 Château Margaux has been delightful both times that I have been acquainted. Rather distant and almost Pauillac-like on the nose, it offers light graphite and tobacco scents. Like many wines from this vintage, the palate is medium-bodied and austere, yet it is balanced and fresher than other vintage of this era. (NM)

Dry and fresh. Racy and transparent. Long and reverberant. Not from Margaux's most glorious era but a very good bottle. (JR)
Served blind at a private dinner in Bordeaux, this is a classic mature Claret that is delectable to drink now...and not too much later. There is a palpable coolness, almost aloofness on the nose that one often finds on this vintage, the overriding sense that this was a good vintage but not a hot one. It offers graphite, sous-bois and tobacco, the fruit having long ebbed away, yet it is still fresh and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and a little austere. Yet there is a sense of natural balance with fresh acidity and beguiling tertiary and cedar notes towards the finish. Wonderful. (NM)
