Big and slightly brutal – almost bitter. Quite broad in the beam. I wouldn't have minded a bit more freshness in this wine. (JR)

The 2009 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is absolutely joyous. Sweet red cherries, flowers and licorice are some of the notes that emerge from this fleshy, supple Bourgogne. The 2009 is a huge overachiever in its class. This is a fabulous, hugely delicious wine from d'Angerville that hits the sweet spot.

I tasted the 2009s from D’Angerville twice recently, once at the winery in December 2011 and a second time in my office in New York. The Volnay, Volnay 1er and Volnay Champans were all less impressive than the first time I tasted those wines, just after botting. Time will tell if the wines are going through a closed phase today, or if I overrated them the first time around. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel. (707) 299-2600
The 2009 Bourgogne is a pretty, accessible wine with generous dark fruit and lovely overall quality at this level. The Bourgogne is made from parcels on the lower slopes of Volnay.

Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with the village of Volnay, having long made some of the village’s finest wines. Best known for its Premier Cru monopole vineyard, Clos des Ducs, this estate crafts fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir – wines that act as standard-bearers for the appellation.
