The 1985 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of my favourite vintages of this cuvée. It is blessed with a mesmerizing bouquet that (as I wrote before) seems to momentarily stop time. Pure red fruit with orange pith, petrichor and a pinch of Earl Grey. The intensity is just magnificent. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, effervescent and full of tension with a cashmere and still sensual finish that leaves you gagging for another sip. Sublime in every way. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

The 1985 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a fabulous grand cru at the very peak of its powers. The spellbinding nose is one of those that momentarily stops the world from turning: pure red currant jam, orange rind, limestone cave and a touch of Earl Grey – just wonderful delineation and heavenly focus, a studied intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a vitamin-like purity and filigree tannins. Everything here is in a perfect place with a silky texture that is utterly seductive. It continues to offer a sweet, sensual finish to a wine that can only leave a stupid grin on your face. And you won’t care. Drink now-2025+. Tasted September 2013.
