The 2002 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru probably has the finest bouquet amongst the raft of 2002s at the horizontal tasting: vivacious red cherries, crushed strawberries, minerals and rose petals all vie for attention. This is so vivid. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth texture, filigree tannin and a very harmonious, quite edgy finish that embraces just a touch of greenness on the aftertaste and makes it work. Wonderful. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.

Shaded ruby. Rather haunting, perfumed, layered wine. Very sweet start with great charm, richness and vibrancy. Great texture with apparent potential. Depth and excitement. (JR)
The 2002 Ruchottes-Chambertin has a sublime bouquet with a subtle oyster shell/marine influence that permeates the vivacious red cherry and cassis fruit. There is great precision and focus here, a “pointillist” Ruchottes! The palate is beautifully balanced with quite a structured opening. There is a tertiary, almost autumnal personality about this 2002, transparent and detailed so that you feel as if you are almost peering into the terroir. It is clearly one of the most elegant wines of the decade from the domaine and it will continue to drink beautifully for years. If you want power, go for the 1999, but for grace and understatement without compromising fruit, the 2002 is where to go. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.
