In this flight, the 1999 Mazis Chambertin possesses off the charts textural richness and unctuosity. Dense, powerful and still very young, the 1999 is very reticent. And yet its greatness is obvious. This is an especially dark, potent Mazis, and yet all the elements are beautifully woven together.

Deep ruby and much richer than the 2010 Mazis. Very silky and exciting. Rich and racy with great depth too. Long and complex with real energy. Pungently thrilling and some fine tannins. (JR)
My second encounter with the 1999 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru in as many months was just as conversation-stopping as the first (see my review in Issue 237). Its deep, brooding bouquet of black fruits and carnal, savory nuances—smoked meats, dark chocolate and licorice—was the same, and on the palate, it was just as full-bodied, multidimensional and complete. Placed in the context of its peers from Domaine Leroy in the same vintage, it stood out as the highlight of the flight for its energy and vitality. So, I see no reason to adjust either my score or drinking window.
Still very dark crimson. Strong smell of chestnuts. Very smooth, long, rich and flattering. Dense and satiny. Very lively with a hint of boiled sweets/hard candy. Very opulent and gorgeous but still with lots to give. (JR)
