Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2022-2050, Neal Martin, Aug 2020

The 2012 Mazoyères-Chambertin displays fine intensity and conviction on the nose, a mixture of black and blue fruit borrowing some of the floral notes (iris rather than violet) from the 2013. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy texture and it coheres nicely in the glass. Juxtaposed against the 2011 and 2013, the 2012 has a little more length and depth, and more mineralité on the finish. You could broach this now, though personally I would wait another couple of years.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru feels a little simple on the nose following on from the Mazoyères-Chambertin 2012 from Maume-Tawse, without the same degree of complexity and nuance. There are some decent rustic red fruit here, but they need more delineation. The palate is much better than the aromatics with feisty black and red fruit and quite firm tannins, though it does not quite deliver the necessary nuance and tension on the somewhat sinewy finish. I strongly suspect that another two or three years will see an amelioration in this wine since it gains finesse in the glass over the course of ten minutes.

The 2012 Mazoyeres-Chambertin is a bit subdued today, with less of its typical explosiveness. Violets, lavender, sweet herbs and new leather add complexity over time. In my view, the Mazoyeres, is the flagship wine at Taupenot Merme. In this tasting it comes across as not fully put together.

Bright ruby. Lightly leathery perfume – something quite masculine about this. Clean and fresh like all of the Taupenot-Merme wines. Subtle and dry on the finish. Lot of vibrant life on the end. (JR)
