The 2009 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru offers gorgeous blackberry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petal and graphite on the nose, along with a splash of iodine. The palate is fleshy and spicy on the opening, and not as precise as the 2010, but I was surprised how muscular the finish is becoming. It turned more lactic with aeration, and faded a little faster than I expected. Pour straight from bottle and enjoy.

The 2009 Mazoyères-Chambertin is a wine that I have not tasted since out of barrel. My word, it has evolved into a lovely Grand Cru as it approaches a decade old. It feels very refined on the nose with wild strawberry, rose petal and just a hint of pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of freshness. I admire the tannins on this Mazoyères, beautifully balanced with hints of Earl Grey infusing the vivacious red fruit on the finish. Pleasurable and yet noble. Tasted at Domaine Direct's dinner at Noble Rot.
The 2009 Mazoyères-Chambertin is another reticent wine. This is a decidedly intense, powerful Mazoyères that needs time to shed its baby fat. The aromatics are expressive and intensely perfumed, but at the moment it is the weight of the year that comes through most. The seductive finish is incredibly inviting.

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. This is a very strong set of wines from Romain Taupenot. The 2009s are quite marked by the year. Today my preference is for the 2010s because the cooler year balanced some of the more overt, fruit-forward leanings that define the house style. Tasting all of the 2009s and 2010s together really brought the qualities of these two very different vintages into focus. Importers: Winebow, Montvale, NJ; tel.
