Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2022-2045, Neal Martin, Aug 2020

The 2002 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a bright, earthy nose of black fruit permeated with shavings of black truffle and seaweed (Japanese nori ). Lovely dried flower scents emerge with time, manifesting quite a complex aromatic profile. The palate is typical of 2002 Côte de Nuits, favoring elegance over power, and "transparent," with filigreed tannins and just a touch of hardness on the finish suggesting that you could afford it a few more months in bottle. Very fine.

Punteggio 90+/100 · Da bere 2016-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2016

Healthy dark red. Still quite fresh and youthful on the nose, offering scents of plum, mocha, truffle and earth. Similarly vibrant in the mouth, showing surprising intensity and lift to its flavors of black raspberry, cherry and earth. Finishes with a faint tannic hardness, with the tannins dusting the front teeth. This wine is past its primary fruit stage but still needs time to unwind. Romain Taupenot told me that he experimented in 2001 and 2002 with raising the temperature of the fermentation to 40 degrees C at the end, and that the wines may be more backward as a result. He finds that this 2002 is just starting to open up now.
