The 2012 Mâcon Uchizy les Maranches has a crisp bouquet, a little more backward than the Lamartine and needing more coaxing from the glass, a bashful fella. The palate is well-balanced and has more tension and bite than the Lamartine with a vibrant green-apple and fresh lemon-zest finish that is direct, if not the most persistent you will find. Dominique said that the acidity levels were the same for both Mâcons, although my perception was that it feels higher here.

Lafon has one hectare that is 30-year-old vines and another hectare of much younger vines. The old vines had lots of the Chardonnay Musqué clone. So since 2010 he's put half the young vines in it and now the Muscat character is suppressed by the younger vines of 15 years and less. So it's more refined. Lively and fluid and very easy and with a hint of orange flower. Racy open and ready. Still a little texture on the end. (JR)
