Punteggio 96/100 · James Suckling, Feb 2024

Complex, mature nose of savory notes, wet forest floor and wild blackberries, plus some delicate spice and bitter chocolate. Rich and full-bodied with excellent concentration and velvety tannins that very nicely support the bold palate. In spite of this, the long finish emphatically dry and very subtle. From a cool year with a long dry season. A cuvee of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 20% carmenere, 10% merlot, 8% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 20th Anniversary Berlin Tasting Event, February 2024.

The 2008 Seña came out of a very dry year that was also slightly cooler than average. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carménère, 10% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, it was aged for 22 months in new French barrels. Dark garnet red in color. The nose presents a balsamic profile with ripe fruit notes alongside subtle hints of pyrazine. On the palate it’s rich with a woody, slightly tannic structure that keeps proceedings compact and a little dry. A vintage that reflects the prevailing style in Chile at the time.

The 2008 Sena has a cool, reserved bouquet of blackberry, raspberry leaf, crushed stone and a touch of Margaux-like violets. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, crisp acidity and a symmetrical, rather stern, minerally finish, tobacco lingering on the aftertaste.

Seña 1:1
Seña

Seña – literally meaning “signal” – was Chile’s first icon wine. In the early 1990s, the country had a reputation mainly for lower-end, high-volume wines, but Eduardo Chadwick, owner and president of Viña Errázuriz, set out to change that.
