Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2022-2032, Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous, Mar 2022

The 2007 Seña is a wine from a year of low yields and overripe expressions thanks to spring rains that affected fruit formation followed by a fairly hot summer. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carménère, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot aged for 22 months in new French barrels. A dark garnet red in hue. A ripe nose of soy sauce, fig jam and herbs. In the mouth the tannins are firm and lit up by the rich balance but restrained by the wood, which also brings a slightly smoky flavor with a hint of sweetness.

A soft and silky wine now with fresh herb, black currants and stone aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a crisp finish. Rich style. 65% cabernet, 26% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc, 3% syrah and 1% merlot. Showing some age now. Drink or hold.

The 2007 Sena has a lovely ripe bouquet of blackberry, blueberry and graphite that is well defined and still youthful. This shows far more purity than the older vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins, fine balance and more minerality towards the finish. This has the precision that I would seek in a top icon wine.

Seña 1:1
Seña

Seña – literally meaning “signal” – was Chile’s first icon wine. In the early 1990s, the country had a reputation mainly for lower-end, high-volume wines, but Eduardo Chadwick, owner and president of Viña Errázuriz, set out to change that.
