Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2011-2017, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Oct 2011

Single vineyard: Mouraton, Mencía, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Gran Negro. Middle of the slope. Older vineyards are all higher up the slope, new ones in valley. Field blend 70 years old. Fermented in open barrels and 14 months in used oak. Then seven months in inox before bottling. Complex nose: lots of lovely plum and cherry fruit but also perfumed and a touch of leather. 'It is not the vineyard that is erratic but me.' Very elegant and has that lovely old-vine concentration without weight. So long. Silky tannins. Has such lightness on the palate but goes on and on. Refined. (JH)

The 2007 QDM Finca Notario is 55% Mencia, 30% Bastardo, and 15% Garnacha Tintorera sourced from a single vineyard and aged in French oak for 14 months. It has a captivating, uplifted perfume of minerals, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and black raspberry. This leads to an intensely flavored, concentrated, elegant offering that is impeccably balanced, long and stylish. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. Quinta de Muradella, located in the town of Verin in the Monterrei DO, is a garage winery where proprietor Jose Luis Mateo and Raul Perez make wine from 34 unique, certified organic, parcels. A principal purpose of the project is to relate the history of the region through the wines. That fascinating story goes beyond the scope of this report, but Ole Imports has it available to those interested. Importer: Ole Imports, New Rochelle, NY; www.oleimports.com
