Fully mature and on the backend of its prime drink window, the 1999 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz offers incredibly complex notes of blackberries, new leather, spice box, and Provençal herbs. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, with notable freshness and purity, this pure class Châteauneuf du Pape isn’t going to get any better, but it should hold nicely for another 4-6 years, if not longer.

With four great vintages of Chateauneuf du Pape, 1999 being the least impressive, readers should not miss out on any of the 1999s from Domaine du Caillou as I have seen them available at retail. No, they are not the 1998s, 2000s, or 2001s, but they are spectacular efforts that represent some of the finest wines of the vintage. Not bad!
