1978 Marques de Riscal

The 1970s are not considered a particularly strong decade, due partly to stylistic choices and partly to cool climatic conditions. Confirming that assessment, the 1978 Marqués de Riscal today shows faded aromatics and a lighter palate. Yet the acidity preserves agility and silkiness, with subtle underbrush, molasses and saffron notes. Even in a weaker year, it retains a fine chalky texture. At 47 years old—my own age at the time of tasting—it holds up with dignity.
