While the 2005 Cornas Vin Noir has a captivating nose of black fruits, caramelized beef, licorice and wild herbs, it has high acidity and moderate depth on the palate, with a streamlined, narrow feel. It’s an enjoyable effort for sure, but given the quality that’s coming from this estate today, both of these 2005s are a slight disappointment.

Inky purple. Youthfully brooding black fruit aromas are complicated by olive, dark chocolate and dried flowers. Chewy in texture, with sweet cassis and plum flavors braced by vibrant minerality and firm tannins. Really stains the palate and finishes with impressive persistence. Nothing easygoing here. This is made from vines that are roughly a century old; most of them were part of the now-retired Marcel Juge's domaine.
Very deep dark blackish crimson, almost as black as its name. Firm but velvety tannins, like a new velvet jacket. Dense and warm on the finish, though only 13.5%. (JH)
