Punteggio 16/20 · FINE+RARE

A nose of freshly sawn wood and a rather leached green-tannin aspect to the palate. That said, there is sume nice fruit lurking beneath.

The 2011 Château Larcis Ducasse is still relatively young and unevolved, although it’s clearly past its youthful fruit-forward phase and is starting to show some secondary nuances. Vivid ruby-hued with no bricking, this beauty offers a classic expression of the terroir in its red and black fruits, cedary herbs, lead pencil, and truffly earth-driven aromas and flavors. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, from tiny yields, it doesn’t have the breadth of a truly great vintage, but it’s concentrated, medium-bodied, and has ripe, integrated tannins and outstanding length. It will continue drinking beautifully over the coming 15 years if well stored.

The 2011 Larcis-Ducasse is another Saint-Émilion slightly volatile bouquet, soy-infused red fruit, a splash of the old Worcester sauce. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite spicy and peppery though the finish feels a little astringent. Not bad, though it will not improve with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Toasty and comforting on the nose. Pungent with dry notes of cordite. Rather fruitless. (JR)
