A little gem of a wine, the 2009 Château Les Grandes Murailles comes from a tiny, 3-acre vineyard located just outside the village of Saint-Emilion, and the winemaking is managed by the talented team of Michel Rolland. Drinking at point today, yet with another decade of longevity, this beauty boasts a deep plum/ruby hue to go with a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, sappy herbs, cedar, and dried flowers. Ripe, full-bodied, and supple, with the classic 2009 sexiness front and center, I'd certainly be happy with a case in the cellar.

The 2009 Les Grandes Murailles has a really lovely bouquet with blackcurrant and soy, loamy scents surfacing with time, all with impressive definition. The palate is medium-bodied with a hoisin and bitter cherry opening, fine acidity and harmony if not the same depth as its peers. It seems to have just firmed up a little towards the finish, to form a more classically styled Les Grandes Murailles than I thought. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' annual Ten Year On tasting.
The sweet black fruit character of this rich and silky St.-Emilion is augmented by notes of mushrooms and terracotta, the powdery tannins perfectly integrated at the long supple finish. Lovely harmony. Drink now. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)
