Given the quality of Haut-Brion, you might have expected more from the 1975 Haut-Bailly, though by now it is "old bones". Early grey and dark chocolate notes on the rather muffled and rustic nose, the palate feels austere and fairly hollow with a herbaceous finish. It has just simply dried out with age. Tasted at a private off-line dinner in London.

I have consistently rated this wine from the low sixties to the low seventies, so this was a relatively strong showing for this vegetal, thin, tannic wine. The nose has opened to reveal some attractive weedy, curranty aromas, but there is not much fruit, and the tannin still dominates this lightweight claret. It has no future.
