Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2016-2028, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Mar 2016

How did he do it? I mean, how did Henri Jayer create such masterful village crus? The 1993 Vosne-Romanée Village was served blind and I was wavering between premier and grand cru level. It sports an incredibly pure bouquet with raspberry preserve, nettle, bay leaf and just a hint of undergrowth (perhaps a clue to the vintage.) The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, a little sappiness on the entry and just the right amount of salinity. What is so astonishing and deceiving is the structure of this wine. It exerts a gentle, insistent grip on the finish, like a lover reluctant to let go of your hand. Tasted on only the sixth day of 2016, I doubt I will encounter a village cru of this level. Tasted January 2016.

Henri Jayer

The wines of Henri Jayer (1922-2006) have mythical status in Burgundy. Coveted by many but tasted by just a precious few, they are some of the region’s rarest and most desirable – considered by some to be the pinnacle of what can be achieved with Pinot Noir.
