Palomino Fino from Sanlúcar. (bone dry). Bottled Feb 2013. This is the sixth release from the same solera of this enterprise that selects individual superior barrels. Previous editions were numbered 4, 8, 16, 22 and 32 of La Bota de Manzanilla. The wine is seven years old on average hosted in a small almacenista bodega in Sanlúcar and this bottling number 42 comprises 19 barrels from the solera. (The location of this sherry store inspired the name Equipo Navazos. This was the zone gradually stolen from the Guadalquivir estuary and traditionally surrounded by the navazos that are today almost gone. We are instructed by Jesus Barquín and his team, 'it is advisable to handle this manzanilla with just as much care as any other great white wine. It should be served at about 9/11ºC in fairly large stemware, never in the cliché copita.' TA 4.15 g/l, pH 3.24, VA 0.24 g/l, RS <2 g/l (bone dry). Pale copper. Meat and two veg on the nose. Low acid but great integrity and with the structure of a white burgundy. A truly great white wine with a real beginning, middle and end. (JR)

The NV La Bota de Manzanilla 42 from the Balbaina vineyard in Sanlucar has a pure biological profile, saline, with iodine, sea shell, aromatic herbs and a touch of smoke. The palate is extremely fine, saline, pungent, sharp, balanced, intense and elegant. My experience with previous bottlings of this wine is that the wine evolves in bottle, getting more intense, losing the saline edge, mellowing up but getting more complex at the same time. You should experiment and keep a bottle to see if you like it. Drink 2013-2018. Equipo Navazos is a small negociant business started in 2006 by Jesus Barquin, a criminology professor at Granada University, expert in and passionate about the wines of Andalucia, and Eduardo Ojeda, technical director of Grupo Estevez (Marques de Real Tesoro, La Guita Valdespino?). They source rare lots of high quality Sherries and bottle them unfined, unfiltered, (more or less) as they are in the bota. The whole thing started as a non-business adventure, with the two of them and historian Alvaro Giron unearthing, purchasing and bottling some superb, unique botas from different bodegas for a private group of aficionados. Word about these private bottlings started spreading through the Spanish Internet wine forums, interest and demand increased, so they decided to bottle a little bit more and sell small quantities to three distributors in Spain. The same happened with small importers here and there, UK, US, Singapore, Australia? and now they are probably the hottest name in Sherry for hardcore fans! As with most projects run by enthusiasts, things tend to get complicated, joint-ventures with other passionate producers (Dirk Niepoort from Douro/Porto, Sergi Colet who makes sparkling wines in Penedes), special wines that do not follow the normal release patterns, non-fortified biological wines, etc. Being so small, they have done so much to bring Sherry back to the attention of the public, both in Spain and the rest of the world. After almost 20 years involved in wine in Spain, I’m friendly with most producers in most regions, but I have to disclose that I’m probably closer to Jesus Barquin, who’s also been a colleague of mine at elmundovino.com, and co-authored, together with Victor de la Serna and myself a book on Rioja and Northwest Spain. Of course, I have no commercial relationship or interest in Equipo Navazos other than the fact that I´ve purchased their wines for my own cellar from the very beginning. Was due to be bottled, after very light filtration, late March 2013. Incredibly salty – like a seaside swimming pool. Very stony too. Quite medicinal. Herbal and intensely medicinal on the palate. Delicate and fresh and fragrant with a touch of lapsang souchong's aroma. (JH)
