The 2001 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château was one of the first releases from Comte du Liger-Belair under Louis-Michel. It has a faded, russet hue in the glass. The nose is clean with leather and rosemary scents, little in the way of fruit but certainly agreeable. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries on the entry, a touch of dried orange peel and sea salt. It is well balanced, light and airy, but the bottom line is that this Clos du Château is better than I had anticipated. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

The 2001 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is fully mature, garnet in hue and offering up a sweet and autumnal nose of dried cherry, fallen leaves and orange rind, framed by a wisp of cedary wood. On the palate, the wine is supple and medium-bodied, with a lush attack, melted tannins and good volume, but it's missing a bit of intensity and depth to underpin its textural generosity.
Very pale ruby. Some sweet violets on the nose. Tender and interesting. Really rather haunting bouquet and much sweeter than most on the palate. There is real lift here that distracts from the fine tannins in the background. Lots of mature pleasure but I’m not sure it has enough stuffing for much more development. (JR)
Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2001 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château is fully mature in colour with light bricking on the rim. The bouquet has retained more fruité that the debut 2000 with light cranberry and tomato-vine scents, soft with delicate rose-petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly austere opening, a little spicy, easy-drinking in style but with more matière than the millennial offering. This deserves a light pat on the back. Tasted June 2015.
