The 2012 Rolland de By is powerful and intense. Crème de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice, mint and spices meld together in an effortless, gracious wine loaded with personality. Sweet floral and spices add perfumed notes on the finish. This is a strong showing for the Médoc, largely because of the considerable presence of Merlot. The blend is 70% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.

This excellent estate in the northern Médoc (near the village of Bégadan) has produced a blend of 70% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. Made by visionary and conscientious proprietor Jean Guyon, this is a classic style of Bordeaux, with notes of cedar wood, blackcurrants, underbrush, and spice. The wine is medium-bodied and has soft tannins, moderately good concentration and texture, and an easygoing finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
Smoky and meaty – very modern and stylised, and successfully executed, with plenty of ripe fruit in support. Tender, fine, savoury and satisfying. (RH)
Colour of elderberries. Sweet and lifted cherry aroma. A bit hard. Tannins pretty firm though they are ripe. Hard finish and hard to see that it will come round. (JH)
