Crimson with a very healthy, glowing ruby rim. Fresh, aromatic, lightly leafy nose but with masses of rich ripeness underneath. Served blind, it was clearly a right-bank wine and probably a Pomerol with all that richness. Very sweet, grainy, round and mature. Gorgeously opulent. A really very successful 1986. Certan de May was on a roll in the 1980s. (JR)

The 1986 has always been less flattering and seductive than the easy-going 1985. It remains a huge wine, with a deep black/ruby color, and gobs of extract, tannin, and body. It needs another 2-3 years to reach full maturity. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2015. Last tasted, 5/92.
