2006 Peby Faugeres

Black cherry and lightly porty with very marked acidity on the finish even if the tannins have been quite well managed. A reasonable example of this super-modern style but there is just not enough soul for me. (JR)

A 100% Merlot offering, the 2006 Faugeres Cuvee Speciale Peby comes from a southeast facing hillside site on limestone soils. It is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage. Big and substantial with extraordinary intensity, abundant notes of graphite, blueberries, blackberry liqueur, and smoky oak, this dense, chewy 2006 requires plenty of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.

Ruby-red. Exotic aromas of dark cherry and coffee liqueur. Fat, sweet and densely packed, with very rich coffee liqueur and chocolate flavors complemented by burnished oak and lifted by spice. A large-scaled, sweet wine whose building tannins reach the front teeth. A second sample of equally high quality showed more fruit expression in the middle palate and finished with a firm acid spine.
