Deep ruby colour, reflecting the impressive nature of 1996 on the Left Bank, a slow and steady vintage that lacked some generosity for its first decade or so, but has been steadily impressing ever since. Here you get classic 1996 mint, cassis, liquorice, slate and crayon character, with edges of rose petal and floral aromatics, fresh acidities as it regularly the case with this wine, keeping things on track even in these mature vintages. It's good quality - and as with many of these earlier years, they are wines for sharing, generous and easy to love. 45% new oak for ageing.

Very dark ruby. Sweetness and slight minerals on the nose. Marked jagged acidity and concentration but not much charm. It may relax into something rather more rewarding...? (JR)
A very tannic, structured wine with an opaque purple color and a sweet creme de cassis nose intermixed with damp earth, vanilla, and licorice, this relatively massive wine has mouth-searing levels of tannin, medium body, and a very backward style that will require considerable patience from its buyers. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025. Last tasted, 3/02.
Pretty plum, currant and floral aromas follow through to medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Delicious.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 2007

This Fourth Growth estate has been owned by the same family (the Sénéclauzes) since 1936. Over the last 25 years, later picking, a higher level of sorting and modern winemaking has fine-tuned the quality.
