Impressive in both colour and in the quality of the tannic architecture. Fully softened and melted at this age as you would expect, but with generosity, crushed rose petals, blackberry fruits, hedgerow, leather, campfire, cranberry, broth on the finish. Another successful 1983 from the Margaux appellation, and if you can find a bottle, I strongly suggest giving it a go. Don't carafe before serving, except for sediment, as it in best drunk soon after opening, but a lovely surprise. Seneclauze family, Jean‑Pierre Hugon manager at the time, as he was for 35 years until 2009. 45% new oak for ageing.

The 1983 Marquis de Terme has more fruit concentration on the nose compared directly with the previous vintage: blackberry, raspberry and touches of wild mint, surprisingly youthful considering it is now four decades old. This is quite dense and tannic, much more broad-shouldered than the 1982, and has more grip, but maybe without the same precision and flattering elegance as the previous vintage. Bold and assertive, you might even cellar this longer. It opens up with time and develops a pastille-like note, although it never fully reaches the level of the previous vintage. Tasted at the Marquis de Terme vertical.
This is a classic Bordeaux, with a deep ruby color, an emerging bouquet of vanilla, coffee, and black currants, rich, highly extracted fruit, medium body, and a long, moderately tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2007. Last tasted, 1/91.

This Fourth Growth estate has been owned by the same family (the Sénéclauzes) since 1936. Over the last 25 years, later picking, a higher level of sorting and modern winemaking has fine-tuned the quality.
