Punteggio 88/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2014

Medium bright red. Redcurrant, smoke and nutty oak on the slightly dull nose. Then brighter on the palate, with a solid underlying tannic structure supporting the flavors of redcurrant and earth. Finishes with noticeable acids and tannins but could still use a bit more precision and lift.

Weightless and gracious on the palate, the Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea is laced with raspberries, crushed flowers, mint and anise, all in a pointed, mid-weight style that is undeniably appealing. The lifted aromatics and beautifully articulated finish impart a sense of freshness that is quite appealing. From barrel, the Ostrea, which emerges from pre World War II parcels in Brochon, was quite a bit deeper. It will be interesting to see if that fruit re-emerges with more time in bottle. Only Magnums available in the US.

(40% whole clusters): More smoke, earth and minerals than red fruits on the nose. A step up from the basic village offering in minerality and strength. Dry but with good ripeness. Finishes with a firm tannic spine.

A somber, dense and sauvage nose of pungent earth, red currant and floral hints leads to impressively concentrated, intense and mouth coating flavors where the old vine dry extract is clearly visible on the balanced, mineral-tinged and impressively long finish. This notably firm and saline-infused effort will require up to a decade of cellar time, and overall, this is a villages well worth considering. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2018+
