The 2012 Chantegrive is a powerful, layered wine with tons of personality. There is excellent underlying material, but the heavily extracted style and copious oak are overpowering. Hopefully consulting winemaker Hubert de Boüard can find a little better balance here. Even with its shortcomings, the Chantegrive is a solid wine, but its potential appears to be far greater than this.

The Leveque family has hit pay dirt again with this 2012 Graves. An inky, bluish/purple color, and an equal part blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the wine shows terrific fruit, great purity, graphite and underlying earthy burning ember notes. It has medium body and loads of fruit, depth and light tannin in the finish, showing this wine can be drunk early, or cellared for up to a decade. A sleeper of the vintage.
Healthy crimson. Quite ‘bloody’ and energetic on the nose. Well put together. Chapeau! Very appetising and it seems much fatter than most 2012s. Stony, fresh finish. Not for the very long term but it does not have obvious flaws. (JR)
