From 28% of the total crop Pavillon Rouge is a real success in a difficult vintage and worth mentioning that on the day it performed better than the grand vin at Palmer. Blackberries, damsons, graphite dominate the lifted and slightly floral nose. This is very good indeed, intensely concentrated, tight and fine with bright acidity. streamlined.

The 2011 Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux has a lovely, open nose with more red than black fruit, cedar and undergrowth, touches of black pepper. Good vigour here. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit, though because of the vintage, it feels a little monotone and slightly underripe on the finish, doesn’t quite kick on. Has it got anything to give down the line? Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
Tasted blind. Sweet and evolved on the nose – Margaux-ish. Polished and a little saline. Quite appetising in a fairly light idiom. Just the odd green note on the finish lets it down. (JR)
Slightly raisined dark fruit. But a woody smell too (not oak). Very chewy and pretty hard and unrelenting on the palate – there's some juice on the finish but not much flavour. (JH)
