The 1988 Figeac is a beautiful wine that exhibits unusual charm and elegance for this sometimes somewhat firm, lean vintage. Unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of dark berries, cigar ash, pencil shavings and smoke, it's medium-bodied, with terrific intensity of flavor without weight, melted tannins and a long, sapid finish, fleshing out with an hour or two in a decanter to deliver even more texture and mid-palate volume. Its suave, seamless, beautifully balanced profile lends itself to drinking today.

The 1988 falls short of my expectations for this property's wines. It has a moderately deep ruby color, noticeable tannin, and a tart, lean, austere, herbaceous character that is followed by a light, surprisingly short finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-1997. Tasted at the property, this bottle recorded at the chateau, the 1988 Figeac has an attractive bouquet that appears fully mature, quite deep in color. The nose is actually more attractive than the palate with dark berries, cola, briary and a touch of iron rust. The palate is weaker with vestiges of black fruit, quite aggressive tannins, quite sharp and grainy with a short, herbaceous, tobacco-tinged finish. Frederic Faye remarked that there was a touch of TCA and he is probably correct, but still, this is a rather hard Figeac that really ought to be better. Drink up. Tasted June 2016. Sitting on the border with Pomerol, Ch. Figeac is a distinguished Saint-Emilion estate that produces some of the region's most sought-after wines. As of 2022, it is officially classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, one of the appellation's top estates along with Ch. Pavie.
