Punteggio 98/100 · Da bere 2024-2040, Neal Martin, Apr 2024

The 1964 Figeac was up against a strong line-up of Right Bank wines from this vintage, and frankly, it easily trumps them all. It has a stunning bouquet with vivacious red fruit, Italian meats, cracked black pepper and a seductive gaminess. There's exquisite definition and focus. The palate is vibrant straight from the off, thanks to the silver bead of acidity. Perfectly poised with layers of tobacco-tinged red fruit, it segues into an elegant yet powerful finish, with all three grape varieties seeming to work in perfect unison. Fabulous. Tasted blind at Olivier Bernard's "4" dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.

Long a personal favorite of mine, the 1964 Figeac continues to drink beautifully, bursting with aromas of sweet black fruits mingled with cigar box, licorice, sweet spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, broad and supple, with a deep and fleshy core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant finish, it's a memorable bottle from this great estate.

The 1964 Figeac is a magnificent wine that I have been fortunate to taste both from bottle and larger formats. Flamboyant from the first swirls of the glass, it offers a cornucopia of black fruit, liquorice, freshly shaved black truffles and star anis. Hints of fig and Medjool dates emerge with time. The palate is beautifully balanced and well defined with the maraschino cherries and blood orange that I have observed in a previous bottle, sensual and ravishing on the finish. Wonderful. Tasted at a private lunch in Hong Kong.
