Dopo l’eleganza del 2018 e la potenza del 2019, l’annata 2020 a Montalcino aveva molto da dimostrare.
 Come mi ha detto Matthew Fioretti di Cerbaiona, “Sulla carta, sembra un’ottima annata.” Statisticamente parlando, la temperatura media era ideale, le piogge abbondanti ma non eccessive – tutto perfetto. Ma l’anno è stato più complesso di quanto i numeri suggeriscano, mettendo alla prova i produttori. Per Cecilia Leoneschi di Castiglion del Bosco, è stata la prima annata in cui ha percepito chiaramente gli effetti del cambiamento climatico a Montalcino – con 64 giorni d’estate senza una goccia d’acqua, qualcosa che non aveva mai visto. È stata, ha sottolineato, un’annata molto variabile nella denominazione – soprattutto tra altitudini basse e alte – come confermato anche dalle altre testimonianze. Nicola Vaglini (Pieve Santa Restituta) ha sottolineato l’importanza delle piogge invernali, che hanno ricaricato le riserve idriche, poi integrate da ulteriori piogge primaverili. La stagione è iniziata con germogliamento regolare e temperature miti. Una gelata a fine marzo ha colpito soprattutto il nord della zona (Vaglini ha riportato perdite del 15% in alcuni vigneti), anche se la maggior parte è rimasta indenne. La stagione è proseguita senza eventi rilevanti fino a luglio, quando il clima è cambiato. Le temperature sono salite, con picchi di 38-40°C. Durante queste ondate di calore, le viti si sono bloccate e la maturazione si è fermata. Fioretti ha notato la caduta delle foglie basali, lasciando i grappoli esposti al sole. Nonostante ciò, Leonardo Berti di Poggio di Sotto ha commentato con sollievo che le temperature non hanno superato i 41°C, come ormai avviene spesso a Castelnuovo dell’Abate – segno del clima mutato. Tra un’ondata di calore e l’altra, si sono verificati rovesci improvvisi – fino a 100mm in tre ore – troppo violenti perché i terreni potessero assorbirli, causando allagamenti (a Cerbaiona, si sono trovati 20cm d’acqua in una cantina). Fioretti sottolinea che questo rende fuorvianti i dati annuali: anche se le piogge totali sono risultate nella media, per le vigne è stato, di fatto, un anno di siccità. Leoneschi ha spiegato che a Castiglion del Bosco utilizzano sempre più colture di copertura per trattenere l’acqua nel suolo. Pur ricevendo meno pioggia – protetti dal Monte Amiata e dai venti costieri – non hanno riscontrato gravi stress idrici nel 2020. A Poggio di Sotto, Berti ha commentato che il 2020 ha portato la giusta quantità e qualità di pioggia, senza ostacolare il lavoro in vigna. Il clima si è rinfrescato a fine agosto, con piogge a fine mese. A Poggio di Sotto, dove da anni usano zeolite (argilla nebulizzata) per proteggere le foglie dalla pioggia prima della vendemmia, Berti ha trovato questa pratica particolarmente utile nel 2020. Le zone più basse hanno ricevuto più pioggia rispetto ai vigneti d’altura. Leoneschi ha spiegato che l’escursione termica nella fase finale della maturazione è stata determinante, permettendo un’ottima maturazione dell’uva. A metà settembre, nuove piogge hanno diviso le scelte di vendemmia: alcuni hanno raccolto prima, altri dopo. A Poggio di Sotto, dove la vendemmia inizia sempre presto, la raccolta è partita il 4 settembre – insolitamente tardi, poiché l’agosto fresco aveva rallentato la maturazione. Vaglini ha segnalato un’ondata di caldo tra il 5 e il 15 settembre, con rapido accumulo di zuccheri, iniziando la raccolta il 15. A Cerbaiona e Castiglion del Bosco la vendemmia è cominciata il 20 settembre, mentre altri – come Casanova di Neri – hanno atteso ancora. Fioretti ha sottolineato l’importanza del controllo delle rese nel 2020: troppo facile produrre troppo e ritrovarsi con tannini verdi. Molti produttori hanno fatto più passaggi di raccolta. A Castiglion del Bosco, Leoneschi ha raccontato che anche nello stesso appezzamento le viti sono state vendemmiate fino a 12 giorni di distanza, segno dello stress stagionale. Entro inizio ottobre tutta l’uva era in cantina, e quasi tutti hanno ritenuto fondamentale la cernita – manuale o meccanica – per eliminare gli acini bruciati o disidratati. Il rischio era ottenere vini con alcol elevato e tannini duri, data la calura. In cantina, l’attenzione si è concentrata sull’estrazione, evitando di stressare il mosto. A Cerbaiona, Fioretti ha effettuato una macerazione a freddo di tre giorni per esaltare “l’esuberanza del frutto”, mantenendo la fermentazione a un massimo di 26°C e svinando dopo 7-10 giorni. Al contrario, Berti ha scelto un’estrazione lunga ma delicata – 50-55 giorni sulle bucce, bagnando il cappello solo quando necessario; un approccio opposto al 2019, anno di piena maturità fenolica. A Castiglion del Bosco, Leoneschi ha utilizzato bâtonnage dopo la malolattica per aumentare la complessità e l’eleganza, ma non la struttura. Per Poggio di Sotto, Berti ha mantenuto il Brunello 2020 in botte per tre anni (loro standard, due è il minimo legale), mentre il 2019 ha passato dieci mesi in più. Molti hanno preferito i 24 mesi minimi per preservare la freschezza del frutto. Alcuni ritengono persino questo periodo eccessivo – un dibattito ormai comune anche in zone come Barolo, dove i minimi legali non riflettono più il clima attuale. Nonostante il caldo, i 2020 hanno sorpreso per la freschezza. I migliori sono vini aperti, fruttati e piacevoli, sebbene non omogenei in tutta la regione. Per Fioretti, il 2020 non raggiunge la grandezza assoluta – i fenoli lo limitano, mancando la finezza delle migliori annate. Tuttavia, il vino è già pronto, con frutto generoso e tannini dolci e moderati: “pronto da bere”, come dice lui, con modestia. Berti descrive il 2020 come “un compromesso tra l’eleganza del 2018 e la potenza del 2019” – e più accessibile di entrambi. Lo paragona al leggendario 2016, meno strutturato ma più immediato ed elegante. Vaglini e Giacomo Neri (Casanova di Neri) vedono un mix di 2015 e 2016: finezza, eleganza, bouquet espressivi e buona acidità. Leoneschi conferma, parlando di precisione aromatica e densità, ma aggiunge che il 2020 è un anno fortemente legato al terroir – dove il sito parla più del produttore. L’annata 2020 non raggiunge le vette del 2016, e serve selezione. Ma i migliori vini hanno un fascino e un’eleganza immediata che – come dice Fioretti – non vanno sottovalutati. Sono vini importanti. La vendemmia 2022 è stata la seconda consecutiva caratterizzata dalla siccità. Nel suo primo sguardo sull’annata, Walter Speller (jancisrobinson.com) ha sottolineato come l’inverno abbia offerto poca o nessuna neve – e quindi scarsissimo scioglimento nevoso. Mentre le forti piogge spesso defluiscono dai pendii, il lento scioglimento della neve viene più facilmente assorbito dai terreni, il che significa che nel 2022 le già ridotte riserve idriche (dopo la stagione di crescita secca del 2021) non sono state reintegrate. 
 Il clima secco è proseguito in primavera e a fine maggio le temperature hanno iniziato a salire. La fioritura è avvenuta precocemente (circa 10 giorni in anticipo rispetto alla media). Luglio è diventato più caldo e secco, e i produttori hanno prestato attenzione alla gestione delle chiome per evitare possibili danni da sole. La scarsità d’acqua ha prodotto acini e grappoli piccoli, con un alto rapporto buccia-polpa, ma la principale preoccupazione legata allo stress idrico era che potesse bloccare la maturazione – in particolare quella fenolica. Grazie alle condizioni calde e costanti, la vendemmia è iniziata in anticipo, con tutto il Nebbiolo raccolto entro i primi di ottobre – i produttori puntavano a preservare gli aromi e la freschezza durante il caldo. In assenza di pioggia, la pressione da malattie è stata minima, ma la selezione degli acini è rimasta importante per evitare frutti raggrinziti o scottati dal sole. Infatti, ai Produttori del Barbaresco, Aldo Vacca ha dichiarato di aver perso circa il 10% tramite selezione, mentre con acini piccoli e selezione, Dave Fletcher (Fletcher Wines) ha avuto tra il 20 e il 30% in meno rispetto a un anno normale. 
 Per avere successo nell’annata, i produttori hanno dovuto preservare l’acidità e gestire i tannini potenzialmente eccessivi derivanti dai piccoli grappoli prodotti, oltre a scartare eventuale frutta danneggiata dal sole. 
 Da Burlotto, Fabio Alessandria ci ha detto che il 2022 è stato “qualcosa mai visto” – una stagione di crescita atipica, senza paragoni con le precedenti. Con condizioni calde, secche e basse rese, si aspettavano vini grandi, ricchi e tannici – ma sono rimasti sorpresi dalla loro gradevole accessibilità. Non è una vendemmia classica o eccezionale secondo lui, ma offre grande piacere. Analogamente, Nicola Oberto (Trediberri) ritiene che i vini non riflettano l’intensità delle condizioni dell’anno. Pochi critici hanno recensito l’annata finora, sebbene vi sia un chiaro consenso sul fatto che non si tratti di una vendemmia straordinaria, collocandosi dietro il 2021, con vini più fruttati ma comunque accessibili. Antonio Galloni di Vinous è rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dai vini fino ad ora. Sottolinea che la gestione della resa è stata fondamentale, assicurando che il carico di frutti fosse sufficiente per permettere alla vite di maturare correttamente. Nonostante il rischio di maturazione fenolica insufficiente, ha trovato i vini più morbidi del previsto, con generalmente meno uso di legno, producendo vini che offriranno “bevibilità da breve a medio termine”, se non grande longevità. Dopo la venerabile annata 2021 in Piemonte, il 2022 è stato un anno più impegnativo. I vini prodotti, tuttavia, hanno finora sorpreso sia i produttori che la critica. In vista dell'uscita dei primi Barbaresco 2022, diamo uno sguardo all'annata.

Piemonte 2022: focus annata

Non è mancato l’hype attorno alla vendemmia 2021 – un anno che produttori e critici hanno lodato come uno dei migliori della storia recente, spesso paragonandolo al 2016 o al 2019. Ma soddisfa davvero queste altissime aspettative? L’inverno precedente è stato fondamentale – mite e piovoso, ha ricaricato le riserve idriche nei suoli, una risorsa essenziale di cui le viti avrebbero potuto disporre più avanti nella stagione. La stagione vegetativa non è iniziata troppo presto e, sebbene ci sia stato un calo di temperature a inizio aprile (un rischio per i Nebbiolo a germogliamento precoce), i danni da gelo sono stati limitati. I rapporti indicano che le zone a bassa quota sono state le più colpite, ma le perdite si sono aggirate solo intorno al 10% – e alcuni produttori le hanno considerate una forma naturale di diradamento verde. Dopo questa minaccia iniziale per la raccolta, la fine di aprile e maggio sono stati mesi freschi e piovosi, ma poi il clima è stato in gran parte caldo e secco fino alla vendemmia. Le temperature non sono state eccessive, fatta eccezione per una breve ondata di calore all’inizio di agosto, ma le riserve idriche sono state fondamentali per permettere alle viti di sopravvivere nelle condizioni di siccità. Il winemaker di Vietti, Eugenio Palumbo, ha spiegato che hanno ricevuto circa 400 mm di pioggia durante la stagione, rispetto ai 600-700 mm di un anno normale. All’inizio di luglio la regione è stata colpita da temporali con un po’ di grandine – sebbene localizzata, ha interessato Roero, Monferrato e alcune zone di Barolo. Le condizioni secche hanno mantenuto bassa la pressione delle malattie. A settembre è caduta qualche pioggia, aiutando le viti a completare il ciclo, mentre le temperature notturne sono scese – fornendo un ampio escursione termica che ha contribuito a preservare aromi e freschezza durante lo sviluppo della maturità fenolica dei frutti. La vendemmia è iniziata alla fine di settembre (Philine Isabelle Dienger è stata tra le prime il 29), proseguendo fino a metà ottobre, con tutto il Nebbiolo raccolto entro la terza settimana del mese. Aldo Vacca dei Produttori del Barbaresco e il team Gaja hanno entrambi paragonato la vendemmia al 2016 – sottolineandone lo stile classico. La lunga stagione vegetativa ha permesso vini strutturati con tannini maturi, mentre le notti fresche prima della vendemmia hanno preservato tensione e aromi. Non tutti sono d’accordo sul suo classicismo; per Dave Fletcher (Fletcher Wines) è una vendemmia con struttura, profondità e densità straordinarie, ma lontana dall’essere tipica. Valentina Grasso di Ca’ del Baio ha spiegato quanto i vini siano chiusi e fruttati scuri rispetto al 2016, necessitando tempo per rivelare la loro complessità. Allo stesso modo, Nicola Oberto di Trediberri ha sottolineato come – sebbene molti produttori di Monforte d’Alba pensassero fosse una vendemmia perfetta per il comune – lo stile potente dell’anno non si adattasse necessariamente a loro, preferendo la purezza di un anno come il 2022. Philine Isabelle Dienger ha osservato come le condizioni calde e secche siano state uno shock per le viti dopo il 2018, 2019 e 2020, e come le fermentazioni siano state difficili da gestire, lente. Alcuni hanno notato che è stato un anno difficile per usare lieviti indigeni, e molti hanno optato per lieviti selezionati per garantire fermentazioni pulite. I vini di Philine Isabelle erano tipicamente a bassa gradazione alcolica, intorno al 13,5% con la filosofia di raccolta precoce, mentre la maggior parte dei vini del 2021 si attestava intorno o sopra il 14,5%. Per Fabio Alessandria di Burlotto, le condizioni calde e secche hanno fornito lo stress giusto alle piante, ed è molto soddisfatto della qualità dei vini 2021 – strutturati, con buona densità e concentrazione, pur mantenendo equilibrio, forse simili al Borgogna 2019. I vini avranno sicuramente bisogno di tempo, dice, ma la vendemmia premierà chi saprà aspettare. La maggior parte dei critici non ha ancora espresso un giudizio completo sulla vendemmia, sebbene Kerin O’Keefe abbia scritto in un primo sguardo all’anno che, sebbene sia stata “una vendemmia difficile”, i migliori vini sono “stupefacenti, capaci di invecchiare”, combinando “l’austerità del 2019 con l’eleganza del 2016”. Riprendendo Alessandria, ritiene che i vini avranno bisogno di un decennio per esprimersi al meglio. Per jancisrobinson.com, Walter Speller era inizialmente cauto sull’anno “enigmatico”, chiedendosi se fosse davvero così buono come si diceva, ma ora lo considera “un’eccellente vendemmia”, offrendo “più corpo e profondità del 2019, assolutamente affascinante e facilmente accessibile”. 2022 Vosne-Romanée, Premier Cru, Les Beaumonts, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat This Premier Cru was an absolute standout of our tasting at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat this year. The pretty nose combines star anise spice, floral lift and crushed rock. Powerfully mineral with such a suave, elegant palate, there is amazing delicacy to the almost smoky, savoury tannin structure, framing the pure, bright fruit. Pinpoint and precise, yet with a mouth-watering lushness, this is a very special wine in 2022. 2022 Vosne-Romanée, Premier Cru, Les Suchots, Nicole Lamarche Nicole Lamarche has 0.22 hectares at the southern end of this Premier Cru, close to Romanée Saint-Vivant, with vines that average 45 to 50 years in age. It is, as Nicole herself described it, “100% seduction”. The nose is sensuous, with sweet, plump berries, baking spice and iris florals, luring you in. On the palate, the delicacy and finesse is astounding. The bright acidity drives the wine, giving tension, yet there’s a luxurious nature the fruit that rolls around the mouth, a touch more generous than her other Vosne Premier Cru Les Chaumes. The tannins are rich, almost savoury, with a pure-rock character. Remarkable. 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin, Premier Cru, Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Domaine Duroché Duroché has 1.2 hectares of this cool, higher-altitude Premier Cru, with vines planted between 1923 and 1980, which is always the last to be picked. The 2022 is an absolute highlight of our tasting at this domaine, the cool site thriving in the warmth of the vintage. There’s instant gratification with an expressive nose layered with red and blue berry fruit and pepper spice. On the palate, it expands, bursting with juicy blueberries, smoky tones and black liquorice. It’s richly fruited, savoury and fresh, with a mineral line and chalky tannins that frame the mouth-watering fruit. Delicious. There’s around 15% whole-bunch this year. 2022 Chambertin, Grand Cru, Jean-Marie Fourrier As with Fourrier’s Latricières-Chambertin, this old-vine plot (a stately 70 years) is up against the Route des Grands Crus. The nose is instantly intoxicating with a violet perfume and depth of dark fruit that soars from the glass. The palate is concentrated, laden with sweet fruit, yet driven with remarkable finesse and freshness. Persistent and pure, with a weightless quality, this is another great wine from Jean-Marie.
 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru, Domaine Faiveley Faiveley has a plot of 0.35 hectares here. The 2022 is an exceptional wine – with a nose that is waxy, chalky and creamy – but beneath these savoury and mineral aromas there is a wine of such density and fullness. There is layer upon layer of flavour here, working through from mineral tones, citrus and yellow-fleshed peach, grilled almonds, honeysuckle and creamy intensity. It flirts with fatness, the rich fruit rolling around the mouth luxuriously, yet there’s a pithy bite that brings it back from the edge – giving tension as the acidity drives on to a bright, sherbet-edged finish. 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin, Premier Cru, Les Goulots, Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini This cool vineyard is at the top of the village, just north of Combe aux Moines and sitting above Champeaux. In 2022, it’s one of the most charming wines in Heresztyn-Mazzini’s line-up. They used 50% whole-bunch this year to bring more delicacy. It opens with sweet, ripe red fruit on the nose, but the palate is much more serious. The fruit is elegant and suave, with a brightness and transparency. The crushed raspberry and tart cherry is complemented by white-pepper spice and the fine-grained grip of chalky tannins. This site’s cooler position clearly thrived in 2022 – superb. 2022 Chambolle-Musigny, Premier Cru, Les Feusselottes, Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat This négoce bottling from Maxime Cheurlin (of Domaine Georges Noëllat) shone at our tasting – one of the finest Chambolles we tasted anywhere, in fact. The nose offers classic Chambolle perfume – a scented bouquet and bright, dainty, detailed berry fruit. On the palate, it manages to be both creamy and crunchy, with a sappy, mouth-watering freshness and intensely mineral backbone that drives on to the long, saline finish. Five barrels were produced. 2022 Marsannay, Au Champ Salomon, Domaine Charles Audoin Cyril Audoin and his father constantly debate which of Champ Salomon and Favières is the better plot in Marsannay. They’re both extremely impressive in 2022, although the Champ Salomon is offering more at this youthful stage. The nose is creamy, scented and sweet, enticing with plump strawberry and raspberry, then there’s a rush of juicy bright fruit that fills the palate – powerful, expansive, dark yet bright and crunchy berry fruit. There’s a pleasingly bitter, hickory-smoke edge, along with lifted peony and violet tones. Lush, juicy and hard to resist. 2022 Le Montrachet, Grand Cru, Remoissenet Père & Fils Remoissenet’s Montrachet is always a favourite of ours and it’s no different in 2022. The nose offers grilled almonds, acacia honey and gunflint – just hinting at what is to come. The palate is remarkably concentrated, layered with swathes of peachy fruit and lemon pith, with a zesty, flinty power. It’s immensely ripe and full, but still beautifully elegant, with freshness that balances the wine’s concentration. A wine that deserves time and will only get better in bottle. It’s all in one-year-old oak this year. 2022 Griotte Chambertin, Grand Cru, Charles van Canneyt From the smallest of the Chambertin Grands Crus, this is the pièce de resistance of Charles van Canneyt’s line-up in 2022. From a plot of vines that are over 80 years old, this is graceful, ethereal, sensual and persistent. It is absolutely complete, with notes of spice, bright red fruit, a touch of sweetness and something minty. There’s no doubt that this is a big wine – as a Grand Cru should be – but it’s medium-bodied, round and fresh with fine-grained tannins, and a long, suave finish full of raspberry and strawberry fruit. This is still young but what a wine – give it a decade before you crack a bottle, if you can resist. Four barrels were produced. 2022 Chablis, Grand Cru, Moutonne, Domaine Long-Depaquit, Albert Bichot In 2022, Domaine Long-Depaquit’s monopole Grand Cru captures the balance of the vintage. It is the most mineral-driven cuvée in the range, with an elegant nose than ranges from lemon zest to white blossom, over a layer of wet crushed rock. On the palate, the wine reveals superb concentration, and is much broader and richer structure than the nose suggests. A backbone of acidity drives towards a beautiful finish full of tension, with hints of salinity that makes you salivate. It will need a few years before it shows its potential. Unfortunately, a large part of the vineyard (the lowest part, neighbouring Fèvre) is being replanted and volumes this year are therefore smaller than we’d have liked. It is nonetheless a fantastic showing – and is undoubtedly our favourite Grand Cru from Long Depaquit in 2022. Drink 2028-2040. 2022 Puligny-Montrachet, La Rue aux Vaches, Alvina Pernot From a village parcel just below Les Pucelles and Clos des Meix, this is always so different to Clos des Noyers Brets – with fleshier fruit. It’s playful on the nose, with different facets and fruits emerging with air. It’s broader on the palate, revealing its proximity to Premier Cru territory. A fantastic showing, it’s the best edition of this wine to date. With only a barrel produced, it’s bottled exclusively in magnum.

Burgundy 2022: our favourites

Burgundy’s vignerons are currently preoccupied with the 2024 vintage – one that has been challenging, with warm, wet weather and high disease pressure, leading to a relatively late harvest in comparison to recent years. But we’ll soon be back on the ground, tasting the 2023s with producers. We’ll be providing a full, detailed report as soon as we can, but – in the meantime – here’s a preview of what to expect from the year.   The 2023 growing season in Burgundy  The growing season wasn’t – for once – hugely eventful in 2023, until the harvest, at least. The winter was warm and dry, delaying budbreak until early April and allowing the region to escape the dangers of frost. The warm weather continued, with a quick and even flowering – promising a generous and homogenous crop. Across the season, rainfall was average for the region. Showers seemed to arrive when needed to support vine growth, with some storms in June, but any disease pressure was easily handled by producers. There was a little localised hail in July, with some damage reported in Meursault.  The first grapes were brought in from 25th August (starting with those destined for Crémant de Bourgogne). Fruit destined for still wines started coming in from the very end of August: 29th for Alvina Pernot, Au Pied du Mont Chauve and Louis Jadot following on 4th September, and Samuel Billaud in Chablis on 11th, with all the fruit in by the end of September. Just as harvest got underway, however, temperatures soared: making for incredibly challenging conditions. As Frédéric Barnier at Jadot explained, it was the first time they’d had to pick in the middle of a heatwave – but was, as he said, “probably our future”. The challenge was largely human: ensuring the safety of those out in the vines picking. There were widespread reports after five people died further north in Champagne due to the strenuous conditions. Some producers harvested at night, or as early as possible once dawn broke, ensuring they stopped before the heat of the day set in, to reduce the risk to pickers. Barnier explained that, although challenging for the team, the hot spell was helpful for the reds. While they picked the whites, the conditions allowed the Pinot Noir to concentrate and gain density, as well as reducing the sometimes-extreme volumes.  The yields were so generous (thanks to the even flowering, warm conditions and plentiful rainfall) that green harvesting was key. Frédéric Weber of Bouchard explained how the vineyards were “a wall of grapes” and they had to drop half the crop. Faiveley green harvested across 80% of its vines. Nevertheless, producers saw record volumes, even on normally low-yielding old vines. At Heresztyn-Mazzini, they reported finding single bunches on their old vines that weighed half a kilo, and Cyril Audoin found he was at the legal maximum even on his oldest plots. At Domaine des Lambrays, Jacques Devauges reported that there’s a third more of their Grand Cru Clos des Lambrays in the vintage, with an impressive 40hl/ha. There were even reports of producers reaching 100hl/ha in potential crop.  Although most vignerons saw even higher yields than 2022, that wasn’t universally the case – as at Lamarche and Hubert Lamy, who both brought in slightly smaller crops than the year before. Even at these addresses, however, producers are happy to have full cellars – and with high-quality wines too.  Key decisions for Burgundy 2023  “It was hard to make bad wines in 2022, but was very easy to take wrong decisions in 2023,” said Louis-Michel Liger-Belair of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair when we visited him last year.  Harvest dates are always important when it comes to the pernickety Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but there were many elements to consider in this vintage. Space was a challenge for some producers, on a purely practical level, needing the requisite number of tanks at the right time to allow them to harvest at the right time. The hot end to the season risked losing freshness, so preserving acidity – especially in the whites – was key. As mentioned above, managing the crop-load was important, balancing quantity and quality. Yields were less of a concern when it came to the white grapes, as Chardonnay is better able to manage high yields, however there was potential concern over concentration for the reds. Good producers, of course, are well aware of the need to balance the vine to avoid any potential dilution – and handled the season to harvest a good crop of high-quality fruit.  With the Chardonnay, Barnier explained how at Jadot they blocked the malolactic on some lots to retain freshness; while for the reds, sorting was important (to remove any shrivelled berries) and saignée common. At Jadot, they bled off between 10 and 20% of the juice. We haven’t yet spoken to many producers regarding élevage; with higher volumes, however, we anticipate that there may be higher portions of new oak at some addresses, while others will have looked to alternative vessels to complement their “standard” portion of wood.  The style of the wines in 2023  So far, we’ve tasted very little – only the whites from Samuel Billaud and Alvina Pernot (both of which were very impressive – find more on these below), and we’ll be reporting more once we’ve been out to taste more comprehensively. We can, however, tell you what producers are saying – and what we’re expecting based on the growing season and our conversations so far.  Following on from the good yields of 2022, 2023 was another plentiful vintage – allowing producers to replenish stocks, and cellars are looking much less bare. With the warm weather and good rainfall, the wines are riper than the 2022s, quite generous in style, with an approachability that means they will drink well in youth – yet don’t let that fool you into thinking they don’t also have good acidity.  We have heard rumours of heterogeneity, and – as ever – producer decisions are key in determining success; with the human hand likely more important than site this year. Those that over-cropped risked producing dilute wines – but they are undoubtedly in the minority, and lesser names. That said, from what we’ve tasted and heard, there is good consistency across sites – from village through to Premier and Grand Cru, and across the Côte d’Or.  Alcohol levels are average for the region – sitting between 12% for Bourgogne or village wines, and up to 13.5% for some Grands Crus. The reds are not powerhouses; Jean-Marie Fourrier compared them to 2009 for their ripeness and the generous yields, but Barnier at Jadot feels they sit between the 2017s and 2019s in terms of richness, with a “buvabilité” (“drinkability”) that is very appealing. We expect the whites to be particularly strong this year – offering similar acidity levels to 2022, but additional richness.  At Alvina Pernot, it’s brilliant to see the style develop – with a very complete range of effortless composure; we loved all the wines, but the Meursault Perrières was an undeniable highlight. Alvina Pernot and Philippe Abadie love the purity and balance in their wines, and suggest the 2023s are a blend of the 2020 and 2022 vintages, while Barnier points to a vintage somewhere between 2015 and 2018. The 2018 vintage is also the reference point for Samuel Billaud in Chablis, whose wines were already enticingly aromatic in July this year – precise and gourmand, with a satisfying suppleness.  News from the region  Burgundy, more than ever before, is a region constantly shifting, with land changing hands, producers and ranges evolving. Here are some of the key developments to be aware of for the vintage:  William Fèvre: This benchmark Chablis producer was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Ch. Lafite Rothschild fame) and 2023 will be the first vintage under their ownership – although be reassured that longtime winemaker Didier Séguier remains in situ.  Alvina Pernot: Alvina Pernot stepped down from her family estate (Domaine Paul Pernot) in time for the 2023 harvest, to focus exclusively on her project with husband Philippe Abadie. There is also a new Premier Cru in the line-up this year – Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains.  Henri Boillot: The 2023 is the 40th vintage that Henri Boillot has produced of their monopole Clos de la Mouchère – a site to which he is rightfully attached. He also noted that the range is around 90% domaine in the vintage.  Hubert Lamy: The 2023 vintage is the first to be made in his new, enlarged cellar.  Charles van Canneyt: The star winemaker behind Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat purchased Domaine des Chézeaux and the 2023 vintage will see the first wines made by him from the estate (under a name that remains to be confirmed). The acquisition brought some prime vineyards, including Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques.  Duroché: The 2023 will be the first vintage of a new Corton from Duroché (half a hectare in Corton Rognet). Technically it is négoce, but is domaine in all but name as they are farming the site themselves.  Olivier Bernstein: Although the Bernstein team has long been farming organically, the 2023 vintage is the first on their path to official certification.  Bouchard Père & Fils: Since Artémis Domaines (the Pinault family of Ch. Latour) purchased the company in 2022, Bouchard has been winding down their négoce operation and the 2023 vintage will be the last for the final few négoce wines, with the range domaine-only from 2024.   What we know so far about Burgundy 2023  A relatively uneventful growing season with a heatwave during harvest  A plentiful crop of good-quality approachable reds and whites  Alcohol levels are average for the region, between 12 and 13.5%  The whites expected to be particularly strong, combining richness and good levels of acidity  The reds seem juicier in style, destined to drink well in their youth and for the medium term  A vintage where producer decisions rather than site seem to have dictated the style of the wines   Keep your eyes peeled for further coverage of the Burgundy 2023 in the coming weeks. A first look at the Burgundy 2023 vintage

Burgundy 2023: first look

We have unearthed an absolute gem in the guise of Rosso della Centa, a 100% Merlot wine grown on just one hectare of a distinct marl clay hillside in Friuli, Italy. The wine is the creation of one of Italy’s top winemakers Nicola Manferrari who first produced the wine in 1985 and has gone on to release it only in top vintages, producing just 1200 bottles per vintage. 

As we have managed to source a small parcel of Rosso della Centa 2010, we explore the history of this incredible and rare wine.  Friuli ranks highly among Italy’s finest regions for white wine production, producing some of the most vibrant, mineral, saline whites on the planet. The global reputation of the top wines of Friuli continues to grow, gaining fans throughout the world and firmly positioning it on the global fine wine map.   Whilst more famous for their white wines, top grower Nicola Manferrari has a very special one-hectare plot dedicated to red wine. On taking over the family vineyards in 1982, Nicola was not happy with the quality of wine coming from this Merlot site. So much so he took to studying French and French winemaking to learn the secrets of Bordeaux and then apply these techniques to his own wine, to get the best out of this unique site. He states that François Champagnol’s Elements de physiologie de la vigne was one of the most intellectually stimulating reads of his life. Nicola Manferrari is one of Friuli’s original trailblazers. Along with Mario Schiopetto, Josko Gravner and Silvio Jermann, Manferrari was just one of a handful of producers in the 1980s who had the vision and courage to follow his convictions.

He experimented with the 1982,’83 and '84 vintages before he was happy with the techniques he had adopted and, matched with the perfect weather, managed to produce something exceptional, releasing the inaugural Rosso della Centa in the 1985 vintage. Nicola was confident that he could create the first world-class red wine from the region and was not swayed by his neighbouring premium sites opting to plant Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot. But for Nicola he believed the Merlot was perfect for the clay and collio marl soils in which Cabernet Sauvignon struggled.   The ’85 was a critical success, described by the critics as the "First Great Friuli Red". Other greats of the region include Enzo Pontoni of Miani fame and Christian Patat from Ronco del Gnemiz have followed in his footsteps making incredible Merlots from the Friuli region.
Nicola Manferrari continued to improve the wine buoyed by its critical acclaim, further reducing the yield, increasing the vine density (more than 7000 hectares per hectare), introducing shorter pruning techniques, using no fertiliser and complete grassing in the vineyards to improve the soil health. The wine is fermented in small 12 hl wooden vats and are matured in small oak barriques for four years. Only the finest vintages are released as Rosso della Centa. 
In the summer of last year Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) had the opportunity to taste some more recent vintages of Rosso della Centa. “Looking over my scores, I can't help but notice how consistent they are across vintages and varieties. Results like these are hard to achieve, but not at Borgo del Tiglio. She goes on to describe the ’06 as “musical and operatic in character… there is complete harmony and silkiness here in another gem from Borgo del Tiglio’s cellar”.

Larner did not have the opportunity to taste the mythical 2010 but we pulled a cork on it this week to find out how the wine has developed and we were blown away by the quality. This is a superb rendition retaining everything that is great about Italian wine – the acidity, freshness, dried floral notes and herbal spice along with all the greatest assets of fine Merlot – the rich expansive multi-layered tannins that provide tremendous depth on the palate and the rich mid-palate juiciness full of black fruits and now with age a beguiling leather and earthy savoury notes. The wine has tremendous energy whilst showing handsome tertiary development and to retain so much acidity in a grape that often lacks it underscores just how fantastic this wine is. 

Nicola believes this steep southwest slope of marl and sandstone is perfectly adapted for his old vine Merlot providing a marked elegance and complexity in his Rosso della Centa. The 2010 certainly reflects this and with only 1200 bottles produced virtually impossible to find. This is a unique parcel unlikely to be seen again and is entering into a beautiful drinking window. This wine is a piece of Italian winemaking history and one for any afficionado not to miss. 

It is always difficult to put fine wine into words but Nicola Manferrari’s philosophy outlined on his website gives possibly the greatest insight into this pioneering spirit of Friuli:
“I believe that in effect, the path I have followed has left its mark on the character of my wines which have, according to many, their own maker’s trademark. Over the last twenty years, I have transformed, studied and debunked certain common beliefs and have also overcome - while allowing plenty of room for the sacrilegious power of empirical observation – some of my own personal taboos. I have observed, researched and innovated in the face of hypocrisy and prejudice. 

"Often, however, while doing this I have unwittingly renewed ties with ways of the past which were interrupted by a modernity which had lost all sense and memory. It was probably my unorthodox approach to the world of wine that has guided my choices, meaning this also includes my checkered educational history; I was at the same time a child of scientific teachings and an orphan of technology. This has taught me to take absolutely nothing for granted, and the words of Galileo, which accompany me wherever I go, have taught me to be humble when facing all situations, and to be dignified when dealing with people.”
