The 2021 Riesling Wiltinger Volz Grosses Gewächs is from the best central parcel of the Wiltinger Braunefels, very rich in iron. Just around the corner from the Scharzhofberg, it faces southwest and is well-ventilated and more open to the Saar, yet warmer than the Scharzhofberg. The nose at first presents very pretty white peach, with a little creaminess and the slightest hint of hazelnut from oak. The palate is supremely lemon-bright, wonderfully charming, but not without spiky, alluring freshness. A very different animal from the rest - bright, zesty and creamy. In terms of analytics it is different, too, despite all of this lemon brightness. 1.6g/L of residual sweetness with a relatively mild acidity of 7.2g/L. (Bone-dry)

The Volz site borders the Scharzhofberg to the west; it is more exposed, and the Devonian slate in the soil is mixed with rocks of volcanic origin. Matured in large oak barrels, made from wood from Van Volxem’s own trees, which, like the vines on the Saar, grew on slate soils. The distinctive acidity accentuates the aromas of lime grass and citrus blossom, while a slightly tart note is reminiscent of white tea. Impressive intensity that truly lingers.
