Punteggio 90+/100 · Neal Martin (Vinous), Jan 2016

(this wine was vinified in a single new barrel, with the fermentation temperature only reaching 26 degrees C): Healthy bright red. Aromas of candied red berries, clove and crushed rock are cooled by a minty element. Densely packed, but there's something a bit peppery and dry to the mineral and spice flavors. Finishes rather unyielding, even raw, with granular tannins. Not a great showing today but still very unevolved; estate manager Christophe Chauvel noted that he's always concerned about getting sufficient exchange with air during the fermentation, which takes place in a closed barrel.

Impressive violet fragrance – effortless but full of enticing, engaging flavour. Fleshy, balanced, medium bodied. The finish doesn't quite deliver as much as the nose, but there is an awful lot to enjoy here – and more to come. (RH)
