Punteggio 96+/100 · Da bere 2028-2048, Neal Martin, Dec 2023

The 2019 La Romanée Grand Cru has a very clean and precise bouquet of dark berry fruit, crushed violet and just a faint hint of truffle—focused and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied, with sapid black cherry and boysenberry and fine structure, but it comes across a bit compact upon initial pouring. It takes time to find its groove, although it is notably tannic and "serious" on the finish. This just gets better and better and better in the glass— a rare wine that reached perfection when I tasted it out of bottle and, had it being decanted for longer, may well have flirted with that once again. Note the plus sign—it’s a mark of its trajectory. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

For sheer aromatic fireworks, this is hard to beat even though the Reignots comes close. This is now much less restrained than it was last year at this time with its wonderfully spicy aromas of various dark berries and floral elements that includes notes of star anise, sandalwood, clove and hoisin. The gorgeously textured, intense and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors seem to be built on a base of minerality while exhibiting stunningly good length on the impeccably well-balanced finale that is a bit less austere than usual. Like the Reignots, this is very classy with an indescribable mix of delicacy and power. Brilliant.

Deep and complete, the 2019 La Romanée Grand Cru unfurls with aromas of plums, raspberries and orange rind mingled with dark chocolate, peonies, exotic spices, vanilla pod and violets. Full-bodied, ample and complete, it's layered and enveloping, with a deep core of ripe, concentrated fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish.
