Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2042, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Oct 2023

The first thing that strikes here is the purity of expression of the blueberry and raspberry fruit, set against cocoa bean, liqourice and a gentle twist of orange peel and saffran. In theory, looking at vintage alone, this shouldn’t be as good as the 2016 2nd wines that we are tasting it alongside, but it stands out for its excellence - a reflection of the quality of Alter Ego. Second wine created in 1998, predominantly on terraces 3 and 4, Mahler-Besse & Maison Sichel negociants owners, Thomas Duroux technical director since 2004.

53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot. Black cherry, clean yet with earthiness. Soft and rounded with dark chocolate and liquorice. Aniseed flavours, not a hint of green – impressive ripeness. There's a good chance of interest evolving here over the next few years. (RH)

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Extremely fragrant, all violet, cherry blossom and even a hint of cherry sorbet. Very juicy, full of red fruit. Fine but persistent tannins. Succulent yet chalky. Good balance and potential, if a little luscious. Will be ready soon. (TP)

The 2017 Alter Ego is pliant, textured and supple. Expressive floral notes add inner perfume and freshness to a core of dark red berry fruit, mocha, new leather, spice and menthol. A wine of striking textural richness, Alter Ago also remains light on its feet and wonderfully nuanced. The 13% alcohol, low by present-day standards, adds to a feeling of freshness.
