Takes its time to open, this is structured and hugely impressive, back to the signature concentrated graphite, cassis, luxurious texture and plenty of graphite and crayon Left Bank kick. This one needs to be carafed if drinking any time soon. Michel Couasnon consultant, 100% new oak for 12 months then 6 months in vat. 48hl/h yield, harvest September 26 to October 19.

The 2016 Sociando Mallet has an attractive bouquet of cranberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, though it is well balanced with a fresh, quite mineral-driven finish that has grace and charm. This is a splendid Sociando-Mallet that I suspect will meliorate with cellaring. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.
Tasted blind. Both fresh and intense and burly-fruited. Sweet start and good follow-through. Acid and tannin there but not too aggressive. (JR)
