Arguably one of the most impressive wines of the vintage, L’Evangile is superb in 2022. This has all the traits that define the top wines of the vintage – with wonderful energy to the palate, beautifully ripe and refined yet deceptively concentrated tannins. Most impressive of all is the elegance of the wine from start to finish – it’s so finely balanced, gliding effortlessly across the palate. There is wonderful clarity to the red and black fruit, with perfumed floral and dark chocolate tones adding complexity, and a saline bitterness positively fizzes on the long finish. This is outstanding. The élevage is of note, with 50% new oak, 10% in foudre and 15% amphora. Blend: 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2022 L'Evangile has a fresh and lively bouquet, an underlying marine influence, a little brine that tinctures the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Very fresh and sapid, intense yet vibrant, this lingers wonderfully on the finish. Very classy, but it is standoffish at the moment. N.B. Two bottles tasted as the first was oxidised. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
The Grand Vin 2022 Château L'Evangile is more serious and concentrated, with beautiful red and black fruits interwoven with truffly earth, tobacco, and savory, floral, spicy nuances on the nose. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, voluptuous, round, sexy L'Evangile that has soft, supple tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a mix of both richness and elegance. It's not massive and is already hard to resist, yet it should have 30 years of longevity.
The 2022 L'Évangile, aged in 50% new oak, 10% in foudres and the rest in amphora, was bottled in May 2024. It has a well-defined bouquet that blossoms in the glass with black cherries, marmalade, orange rind and light mineral aromas. This is very controlled and focused. Pure in style, the palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a saline note on the middle and finish. It is not as powerful as you might presuppose, yet it feels long and tender—a classically styled Pomerol. This is excellent.
