The 2022 Syrah York Mountain reveals darker berries, peppery herbs, charcoal, and smoked earth notes in a meaty, mineral-laced profile. Made from 100% Syrah and aged 18 months in French oak mid-sized barrels (30% new), it's balanced and medium to full-bodied, with ripe, polished tannins, remarkable purity, and a great finish. Drink 2025-2035. Winemaker Jordan Fiorentini continues to keep Epoch Estate at the top of the hierarchy in Paso Robles. She makes a bevy of wines, all of which are from their estate Paderewski, Catapult, and York Mountain vineyards. While the 2022s clearly rank with the top wines of the vintage, I think her 2023s might be even better. Readers can’t go wrong with any of these, and Jordan’s wines always shine for their purity, vibrancy, and balance while staying true to Paso Robles with ripe, sexy levels of fruit.

Another high point of the Epoch lineup is the 2022 Syrah York Mountain, which offers a dark, serious, gamey nose chock-full of cracked black pepper, charcoal embers and beautiful umami-driven flourishes of kelp that I find quite rare in Paso Robles Syrah. The palate is massive in its richness and concentration while remaining savory and classy, perfectly propped up by balancing acidity and fine tannins. The finish is full-throttle and relentlessly intense, circling back to the spice-driven lusciousness of the nose. This is a fantastic expression of this unique subregion and one of my favorite wines of the vintage.
Highly expressive and Old World inspired, the 2022 Syrah wafts up with an array of savory herbs, ashen stone, blood orange and blackberry. It sweeps across the palate, cool toned and racy, with polished red and black fruit swirling beneath an air of violet inner florals. A hint of green olive mingles with liquid rock and mineral, all framed by edgy tannins. The finish is long and perfectly balanced.
