The intensely golden colored 1986 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann is very clear and refined on the elegant and aromatic nose that exhibits a fine, ripe and intense, stewed stone fruit aroma intermingled with iodine, flinty and herbal notes. Playful and finessed on the palate, this is a very elegant and stimulating classic with the salty savoriness of a Mosel or Nahe Riesling. It is indeed an enormously frisky and buoyant Riesling with some beautiful fruit sweetness uplifted by fine saline grip and acidity. This is a lean and elegant but concentrated Rangen with a German twist. The finish is long and aromatic. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023. Olivier Humbrecht summed up the vintage: "Late flowering, medium small crop. Not so warm summer but excellent late ripening conditions, with lots of VT and SGN produced. Very dry weather. Early November harvest. The Riesling in the Rangen was healthy, but the other grapes had significant noble rot. First vintage for whole-cluster pressing. Very slow fermentation."
