Punteggio 87/100 · Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2016

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru feels overdone on the nose and certainly lacks the grace and terroir expression of its peers this year. There is a lot of reduction here and it is difficult to peer through. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, rather pushed in the winery perhaps although there is satisfying weight on the finish. You feel that this could have been vastly improved with more prudence. Tasted September 2016.

The 2013 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is incredibly dense at this stage. Powerful yet implosive, the 2013 is a ball of tightly wound energy. Dark cherry jam, cloves, mint and hard candy are barely developed in an embryonic Bèze that appears to have a very bright future ahead of it. The aromatics continue to soar as the wine sits in the glass, hinting at what is to come. Readers will have to be patient with this decidedly authoritative, incisive Bèze.

Rich dark fruit aroma with a touch of vanilla. Deep and firm and dry, the tannins really smooth but more like paper than silk. Chalky finish. Young and hidden. Cool, long finish. (JH)
