The combination of caramelized mandarin orange, white peach and yellow apple aromas is compelling, but the tension between the ripe flavors and the electric acidity on the sleek, light- to medium-bodied palate is extraordinary. Very pristine, stony finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Ayler Kupp Kabinett #5 unites slate and yeasty funk on the nose. Lemony vivaciousness and tip-toe-dancing playfulness become apparent on the palate. Slender, vivid and dangerously enticing with its lemony lightness, this is the very essence of a Kabinett. The gorgeously aromatic and long finish shows a distant glimpse of tangerine. What a joy. Auction version of Fass 8 from this Grosse Lage made from a selection of the grapes, the greenest and most backward. Spontaneous-fermentation aromas still. Piercing acidity and crunchy green-apple flavours. Very youthful and for the moment less fun than Fass 8. (JR)
