Here we have the sort of sunny brightness and juiciness of lemon and grapefruit that are also encountered (less expectedly) in this year’s Juffer Grosses Gewächs. The feel is firm but with a flattering trace of silkiness. Hints of huckleberry and site-typical cassis display their piquant side and serve for counterpoint on a seriously sustained, stone-lined but vibrant and engagingly juicy rather than austere finish. Haag noted that “I think we were the last to harvest in Goldtröpfchen.”

The 2017 Goldtröpfchen Riesling GG is fine and flinty on the nose, revealing a very elegant, refined and crystalline bouquet. Silky, lush and highly elegant on the palate, this is an intense, fruity, remarkably refined and polished, very persistent Goldtröpfchen with great terroir expression and a crunchy, grippy and salty finish. Forget all the lychee characteristics you might have read about regarding this infamous vineyard. This is its most aristocratic expression, but this glass is the first emptied of all the crus. Tasted from a decanted bottle in March 2019.

RS 2.5 g/l. If ever a wine had chiselled cheek bones, this is it. Tastes like rain clouds. Towering and formidable. Lime-soaked rocks and craggy and glistening with iron-black rain. Wild, and uncompromising and stormy. (TC)

The most user-friendly of Schloss Lieser's Grosse Gewächse in terms of early accessibility. Fresh green mint rather than a cutting herbaceous edge spreads a little charm, and the palate allows a modicum of sweet yellow fruit to cross the threshold of rocky minerality. Cool mint and juicy acidity make the mouth water. A sprinkling of dust and stone add complexity without throwing down the mineral gauntlet. (MS)
