A best-barrel selection from lots originating in Ma Douce and Ma Princesse, the 2021 Chardonnay Coup de Coeur is another terrific example of Old Wente-selection Chardonnay. Hints of toasted oak mark grilled pineapple and peach notes on the nose, while the full-bodied palate starts off round and generous, then narrows and gains citrusy focus on the near-endless finish.

The 2021 Chardonnay Coup De Coeur takes its inspiration from Luc Morlet’s time working at Peter Michael as well as the work of Helen Turley and is a blend of the top barrels from the Ma Douce and Ma Princesse. On opening, it displays very elegant notes of flint that frame the wine beautifully before giving way to aromas of fresh pineapple, candied lemon, fresh flowers, and delicate spice. Medium to full-bodied, it’s rich without ever feeling heavy and has a weightless feel, with a great balance and more mineral persistence through the long finish. This extraordinary wine checks all the boxes for some of the highest quality white wines being made in Sonoma today. Drink 2025-2037.
The 2021 Chardonnay Coup de Cœur is a selection of the best barrels in the cellar. It is also one of the finest—maybe the finest—Chardonnay I have tasted from Luc and Jodie Morlet. All of the elements are so well balanced, and absolutely nothing stands out. A wine of vertical power and tension, the Coup de Cœur dazzles from start to finish. The interplay of fruit depth, acid and structure is so compelling. Even with all of its intensity, the 2021 possesses remarkable transparency.
