Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2025-2033, Virginie Boone, jebdunnuck.com, Apr 2025

Chalky tannins and a gravelly texture mark the 2023 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard right away, as layers of fresh red berry meet stony minerality and well-integrated oak. The wine's balance is what stands out most, delivering plenty of flavor and mouthfeel, with a lasting brightness and sense of place and vintage. Drink now through 2033. Clarice is Adam Lee’s SLH-focused wine brand, named for his grandmother.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard shows the deep, concentrated power this site typically exudes, somewhat tempered by the freshness and energy of this long, cool growing season. The palate is dark-fruited, rich and saturated but snaps into a focused, long finish laden with sweet, luscious fruits and fine, powdery tannins that draw out the finish.

Tasted as a final blend from tank before bottling, the 2023 Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard feels like it’s already in the zone. Blue/purple fruit, violet candies and sweet lavender meet with exotic traces of Moroccan spices and coastal herbs. A wine with a mind-bending amount of layers, it’s clear that there’s an incredibly bright future here—a potential classic in the making.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is every bit as beautiful as it was from barrel, and then some. Deeply pitched exotic spice tones, lifted herbal tones and powerful but weightless blue/purplish fruit flesh out gorgeously in the glass. The structure here is so refined, so calibrated, built around a spine of ultra-fine tannins and bright, fresh acids that lend shape through the epically long, vibrant finish. As with all of the 2023s at Clarice, the Garys’ is on the lighter side, but that works incredibly well. A testament to the depth and power of Santa Lucia Highlands terroir, this is one of the very finest Pinot Noirs I’ve ever encountered from the region.
